"Instrumental" Press Release
William Traver Gallery, September 2005
William Traver is pleased to introduce emerging glass artist Christopher McElroy
in his first solo exhibition with the gallery. Instrumental showcases several of
the artist's delicately organic, small-scale flame worked vessels and teapots,
as well as a selection of sculptural objects.
McElroy creates a strong sense of place within his pieces by incorporating
architectural elements, along with mystical landscape scenes. As is the case
with many Northwest artists, a distinct Asian influence can be seen in his work,
along with a deep reverence for our natural surroundings.
Reminiscent of artifacts from another time, many of McElroy's pieces are
composed of distinct bands of color, suggesting the striated patterns found in
recently excavated earth. His ingenious color application techniques are paired
with intricate, hand carved designs to produce richly textured surfaces.
"While I work with many outstanding artists in my profession," says gallery
owner William Traver, "I rarely see the kind of passion and dedication that
Christopher possesses. In my experience, this passion and dedication is exactly
what it takes to succeed as an artist. I have no doubt that Chris will go on to
do great things."
Christopher McElroy received his BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in
Richmond, VA. He has studied extensively at Penland School of Craft (NC), and
has served as a teaching assistant at Pilchuck Glass School. McElroy currently
lives and works in Bellingham, WA.
Christopher McElroy's Instrumental will be on display at the William Traver
Gallery-Seattle through October 2nd, 2005.
